Camp Challenge Location

Camp Challenge is 43 miles northwest of Anchorage and 9 miles east of Wasilla and 7 miles west of Palmer. (MAP). The camp’s 57 acres are surrounded by snow capped mountains, forests, and sits on the shore of Neklason Lake.

Sleeping Arrangements

All campers stay in nice warm cabins. Each cabin is equipped

with electricity, heat, and bunks. The cabins are located in close

proximity to the dining hall and shower facilities. Four of our cabins

sleep 14 very comfortably, which usually includes 12 campers and

2 counselors and one cabin sleeps 22, which usually includes

4 counselors and 18 campers or 3 counselors and 19 campers.

Cabin Requests

Once a camper's registration is received, the camper is placed in the proper grouping and cabin according to school grade, age, and development.  Each camper is allowed one (1) cabin request of another camper they would like to be with. Every effort is made to place campers according to their cabin preference, but final placement is left up to the Camp Director.

Medical Emergencies

Every session Camp Challenge has a full time registered nurse on property. A full service medical center is located in Palmer just 12 minutes away.

Camper Medication

We take meticulous care when dispensing your child’s medicine. Please help us by carefully preparing it in the following way:

  1. Make sure your camper’s full name is on the medication.

  2. Place all medicine in its original container in a zip lock style plastic bag. Unless medication is in its original container with prescription label, it will not be given.

  3. Enclose complete written instructions.

  4. Give it personally to the Camp Challenge nurse when you check in.

Parental Visits & Calls During Camp

In order for your child to have the full experience of camp, we do not encourage parents to call or visit.  We ask that parents call to speak to their campers only in the case of an emergency.  Campers are seldom near a phone and it is challenging to coordinate calls and visits with the campers schedule.  In addition, visits and calls from parents can cause homesickness in a camper or jealousy among cabin mates.  We highly encourage cheerful letters, faxes or emails from family and friends throughout your campers session.  In case of an emergency please call the camp office and we will arrange for a time for your camper to return your call as soon as possible.

Camp Food

One of the highlights of a week at Camp Challenge is the food prepared by our head cook. We provide three nutritionally balanced meals each day - whether it is presented buffet style, family style or cookout style.

Note: Campers may not receive any food via mail while at camp to keep critters out of the cabins!! We will work with any camper who may be allergic to certain foods.

Opening Day Schedule

Check-in time is between 3:00pm and 5:00pm on the opening day of your session. Feel free to stay awhile, meet your camper’s counselors, and get your child settled into their cabin.  We ask that you do no show up any earlier on the opening day of camp, because the staff is still preparing for your campers to arrive.

Picking Up Your Child

Pick up on the last day of camp is at noon.  We request that you do not come

to pick up your child any earlier due to finishing up of our final programs.

Campers leaving camp will be released only into the care of their

legal parent or guardian. This applies to campers leaving the last day

of camp or at any other time. This is another example of Camp Challenge’s

level of thorough care for your child. No other person may pick up your child

without written permission from YOU, the legal parent or guardian. You may

be required to show your drivers license or picture I.D. on Closing Day.

We do this in order to keep your children safe - please come prepared.

the HUB (camp store)

camper at the end his or her camp.  This card does not expire! The HUB stocks:
